Between 2007 and 2021, the researchers looked at the health records of 59 type 2 diabetes patients who participated in a heart wellness programme and maintained a whole-food, plant-based diet. The patients ranged in age from 41 to 89, with an average age of 71.5 years.

These patients showed considerable blood glucose control improvements, and 37% of the research participants experienced complete diabetes remission.

The study also revealed that individuals who made these lifestyle modifications on average took less glucose-lowering drugs.


This study shows that high-fiber, low-fat plant-based diets can assist patients who are already getting standard-of-care treatment in achieving remission from type 2 diabetes mellitus. The trial was distinctive since it had a primary aim of remission rather than improvement in diabetes and did not call for calorie restriction or fasting.
