 A number of Faculty and Staff Members Are Nominated as 2023 Health Care Heroes Finalists


More than 20 healthcare organisations and individuals from across the city have been recognised as finalists for the Memphis Business Journal's 2023 Health Care Heroes awards, including faculty and staff from UTHSC and affiliated teaching hospitals.

Each year, organisations, businesses, and people are recognised for their contributions to healthcare in Memphis and the Mid-South. Administrative Excellence, Community Outreach, Health Care Innovations, Health Care Provider-Physician, and Health Care Provider Non-Physician categories all had awards given out. A Lifetime Achievement award will also be presented to one person in recognition of their years of dedication to their particular field.


Category for Administrative Excellence:


Senior Associate Dean of Finance and Administration of the UTHSC College of Medicine, Teresa Hartnett, EdD, MPA


Innovations in Health Care:


Dr. Kenneth Ataga, director of the UTHSC Centre for Sickle Cell Disease, Plough Foundation Endowed Chair in Sickle Cell Disease, and professor of medicine at the UTHSC College of Medicine


Senior Associate Dean of Finance and Administration of the UTHSC College of Medicine, Teresa Hartnett, EdD, MPA

John Bissler, M.D., chief and professor of the UTHSC Division of Paediatric Nephrology, director of the Tuberous Sclerosis Centre of Excellence at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital, and medical director of nephrology at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital


Terri Finkel, MD, PhD, associate chair and professor of the UTHSC Department of Paediatrics, deputy department chair of Clinical Affairs at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital


Non-Physician Health Care Category


Advanced practise nurse at Regional One Health and assistant professor at the UTHSC College of Nursing is Crystal Martin Walker, PhD, DNP, FNP-C.  

Evan Glazer, MD, PhD, a surgical oncologist at Regional One Health and assistant professor of surgery

Dr. James Harkess is an orthopaedic surgeon at Campbell Clinic and Baptist Memorial Health Care and an adjunct professor at the University of Tennessee Health Science Centre.

Faculty and employees from UTHSC are among the finalists this year, who are chosen from organisations, private practises, nonprofits, insurance programmes, and entrepreneurial businesses from all throughout the city. Finalists are nominated and selected every year. The finalists will be highlighted in the Memphis Business Journal's weekly issue of August 11 and honoured live at the awards event, which will take place on August 17 at The Kent in Memphis.
